The Chicago Sun Tribune remarked 'Porcelain' as “if it didn't move you (in every sense of the word), then you probably had no pulse.’
"Porcelain" was born from a romantic relationship which @Moby had. He was in love with a woman, but deep down he knew they were not meant to be together. I think many of us can relate to this type of experience. Moby disliked "Porcelain", criticizing his own production as "mushy" and his vocals as "really weak". He didn’t think anyone would want to listen to it. Little did he know that millions of people would connect with the “mushy” and “weak vocals”. Thankful he was persuaded to include the song on Play, which many of you know is the best selling Electronic Music album of all time. Something to remember is that vulnerability is we all share hard times and struggles, it's what makes us human. We all have feelings and emotions. Sharing these and being vulnerable is one of the most human things we can do.
The album became successful mainly because of licensing deals. An example of this would be in 2000, the film The Beach featured "Porcelain," which gave a massive boost to Porcelain’s exposure. Additionally, "Porcelain" was prominently used in commercials for Volkswagen, Polo, Bosch, and France Télécom. From 2001 to 2004, the Spanish television channel TVE 1 also used "Porcelain" as background music for its idents.
Also in this video it’s important to highlight Diane Charlemagne. She performed vocals for Moby for many of his live shows. She also provided the vocals for Goldie's "Inner City Life". After being diagnosed with kidney cancer, Charlemagne died of the disease on 28 October 2015, aged 51.
