Question: How has the development of synthesizers and electronic keyboards helped you as an interpreter?….A lot. Tremendously!Vangelis’ answer is so simple yet the meaning behind it is so deep.
The meaning is hard to put into words. Like Aphex Twin said, sometimes speaking about electronic music defeats the purpose of it. In this case the music does the talking. Vangelis communicated his emotions and feelings through synths, one could say most famously through the Yamaha CS-80. It’s as if someone were to ask Vangelis “how do you feel?” and instead of answering with words he played the synth.
He makes an incredible analogy that synths are the microscopes or telescopes of acoustic instruments. I’ll take it a step further and say that they are the microscopes and telescopes of communicating human emotions. Where words fail, these instruments say what we cannot. Vangelis saw, and thought in terms of sounds. He was wired differently. Some say he was a modern day Mozart. I’d agree with that. This segment is “The man and his music” a tv series, which in this segment featured Vangelis. One of the most famed electronic music composers of our time. It was the electronic theatre show which aired this documentary in 1984 on the Scottish Channel Grampian Television now known as STV.
